If this is your first co-op shooter, Medic is the kindest teacher: your job is obvious, your mistakes are forgivable, and squads always want one. If you're coming from the first game's Gunner or Demolisher, Marauder is the spiritual successor to the Demolisher (official site) and feels immediately familiar.

Solo vs squad choice

With AI teammates (Alpha mid-range, Beta sniper, Gamma shotgun — GamingBolt), your bots already cover ranged and close damage, so solo players get the most from classes that multiply the whole team: Medic's sustain or Machinist's control.
